The two procedures Mastopexy (also known as a Breast-lift) and Mammaplasty (also known as a Breast-Reduction) are actually quite similar, because they are both aimed at remodeling and shaping the breast. The reduction is performed by removing a part of the large breast and reshaping it. The breast-lift procedure is performed by removing some skin, and possibly a small part of the breast.

Breast reduction or Mammaplasty is a procedure where the breast is reshaped by removing excess fat and skin to form smaller breasts, and the nipples are repositioned. This is a procedure that can also be used to even up the size of breasts – where one may be much larger than the other.

The size of a woman's breasts are partially determined by her genes, the same factors that are inherited and can affect the size and frame of the woman. It can also be influenced by her weight and hormones. Some women develop larger breasts from early adolescence. Others may develop much later in life, even during menopause or after the use of HRT. This can be a source of both physical and psychological discomfort. Large breasts may also appear saggy and droopy with downward pointing nipples.

Women of all ages experience feelings of depression and other numerous problems related to having large breasts. Some of these problems are as follows:

  • Too much sweating, rashes and skin irritations
  • Pain in the areas of the back, neck and shoulders, including grooves in the shoulders from the bra straps.
  • Discomfort while performing sporting activities.
  • Uninvited attention and comments from people.
  • Problems finding clothes that are comfortable and attractive.

Am I a good candidate?
Most women that opt for this type of procedure do so because they are restricted somewhat in their physical activities and experience a good amount of physical discomfort as well. Under most circumstances, this procedure is not performed until the woman's breasts are fully-developed. The most suitable candidates for this procedure are those who are mature enough to understand the details of what the procedure involves and have a clear understanding of the results and benefits that can be obtained from it. This is not a procedure that is recommended for those women that intend to breastfeed.

Women with large and pendulous breasts are prone to a variety of ailments due to the excess weight of the breasts. These range from back and neck pain to skin irritation and skeletal deformities, even breathing problems. Br straps can cause painful indentations in the shoulder. Abnormally large breasts can make women or teenage girls feel extremely self-conscious
